India won the T20 World Cup at home. The margin was the story.

A 96-run win over New Zealand in Ahmedabad made India the first side to win three T20 titles, the first to defend one, and the first host to lift it.

India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 8 March 2026, posting 255 for 5 and bowling New Zealand out for 159.

Three records fell at once. India became the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles, after 2007 and 2024; the first to successfully defend the trophy; and the first host nation to win it.

The margin

Ninety-six runs is not a close final. In a format built to compress the gap between the best and everyone else — twenty overs, one bad powerplay, and a favourite is gone — a defeat of that size in a final is rare.

The 255 was the decisive act. A total that size in a World Cup final removes the chase equation entirely: the opposition is not pacing an innings, it is attempting a rate that requires taking risks from the first over, and the wickets follow.

Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match.

Suryakumar Yadav’s place in a short list

Suryakumar Yadav became the fourth Indian captain to win a major ICC event, after Kapil Dev in 1983, M.S. Dhoni in 2007, 2011 and 2013, and Rohit Sharma in 2024 and 2025.

That list is worth pausing on. India has played international cricket since 1932 and has produced four captains who have won a global title. Suryakumar joined that group in his first cycle in the role, and did it at home — which raises expectation rather than lowering it.

Winning at home is harder than it sounds

The host-nation record in cricket World Cups had been conspicuously poor, and the reasons are structural rather than superstitious. Home conditions are as legible to opponents as to hosts. Expectation is heaviest where the crowd is largest. India had lost a home ODI World Cup final in 2023 in front of the same stadium.

Which is part of why the manner of this win matters. A narrow victory would have been a title. A 96-run win removed the ambiguity.

What it sets up

India goes into the next cycle as the reference point in the format, holding a trophy defended rather than won once. The tournament also served as a large-scale test of Ahmedabad’s capacity to host a global final — relevant given the city’s role in the 2030 Commonwealth Games and India’s 2036 Olympic ambitions.

The prize money, $2.64 million from the ICC, is close to irrelevant to a board of the BCCI’s size. The demonstration of hosting capability is not.
