Bhogapuram opens, and north Andhra gets its own front door
The ₹4,700 crore greenfield airport cleared its aerodrome licence in July. Its real significance is what it does to Visakhapatnam's claim on investment.
Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram, about 40 kilometres north of Visakhapatnam, has moved from construction site to operating airport over the course of 2026. It completed its inaugural test flight on 4 January, and the DGCA issued its aerodrome licence on 7 July.
The ₹4,700 crore greenfield project, built by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited, opens with capacity for six million passengers a year and headroom to scale.
Why a second airport
Visakhapatnam’s existing airport is a civil enclave on an Indian Navy airfield. That arrangement has worked, but it caps what the city can do: military priority constrains slots, expansion is limited by the base’s requirements, and international operations have always been thin.
Bhogapuram removes that ceiling. Scoot, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier, has already told passengers it will shift all its Visakhapatnam services to the new airport — the first airline to publicly confirm the move, and a signal that the transition is commercial rather than ceremonial.
The connection to everything else
An airport is rarely just an airport in a development plan. Bhogapuram sits at the northern end of a corridor the state has spent heavily on: the Google AI hub campus at Visakhapatnam, the NTPC green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka, the Vizag steel plant’s revival, and the Mulapeta port further up the coast.
Each of those requires people who fly. A gigawatt-scale data centre campus is built and maintained by engineers who arrive from elsewhere, at least initially. International executives evaluating a site read connectivity as a proxy for seriousness.
That is the argument for building Bhogapuram before the demand exists rather than after. It is also the risk: six million passengers a year is a target, not a booking.
The timing question
Reported opening dates have moved — a 26 June 2026 date circulated widely, with formal inauguration by the Prime Minister subsequently indicated for a later window. Construction figures reported across 2026 ranged from 91.7 per cent in November 2025 to 97 and then upwards of 99 per cent through the year.
That drift is ordinary for a project of this size. What matters is that the licence has been issued, which is the step that converts a building into an airport.
What to watch
Two things will tell you whether Bhogapuram works. The first is route additions beyond the initial transfers — specifically whether any carrier adds a long-haul or Gulf route that Visakhapatnam could not previously support. The second is surface connectivity: an airport 40 kilometres from the city it serves is only as good as the road to it.
